US military nearly engages China due to AI intelligence error
An AI-generated intelligence report nearly triggered a military confrontation between the United States and China this spring. During a period of high tension involving conflict with Iran, a report circulated through the U.S. military claiming that a Chinese vessel in the Middle East was transporting components for a nuclear weapons program.
In response to the report, the U.S. military initiated immediate preparations for an interception. This included deploying military aircraft and preparing armed boarding teams to seize the ship. However, officials halted the operation at the last moment after a closer review revealed the report was entirely false.
Investigations determined that the error was caused by an AI chatbot hallucination. An analyst at the U.S. Special Operations Command Pacific had used a chatbot to analyze the ship's manifest, which combined open-source intelligence with classified government data to reach an incorrect conclusion. The analyst then used AI again to format these findings into a standard intelligence report. The Pentagon and U.S. Pacific Special Operations Command did not respond to requests for comment.
