AI hyperscalers boost market concentration, reshape index funds
Large‑cap technology firms that run massive data centers – often called hyperscalers – are seeing strong earnings growth. Amazon reported a 37% jump in AWS revenue, Meta posted a 28% revenue rise, and Alphabet’s Google Cloud revenue surged 82% in the latest quarter. Their rapid expansion is driving a rally in hyperscaler stocks.
At the same time, the surge in AI‑related earnings is concentrating ownership in major index funds. The ten biggest holdings now represent 36% of the S&P 500 and 46% of the Nasdaq‑100. Nvidia alone accounts for about 7.6% of the S&P 500. Analysts warn that this top‑heavy exposure reduces the diversification benefits of low‑cost index funds and could increase risk for investors.
Investors are being urged to reconsider traditional broad‑market ETFs and to be aware of the heightened concentration risk stemming from the dominance of a few AI‑driven companies.
