AI identified as new monetization engine for mobile operators via 5G

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a new monetization engine for mobile operators through 5G networks. GSMA Asia Pacific Head Julian Gorman stated that the industry must focus on converting 5G into a technology that delivers tangible economic impact, rather than focusing prematurely on 6G standards, which are expected to be commercialized around 2030.

AI is expected to change data traffic patterns on cellular networks. While the 4G era was dominated by video consumption and downlink needs, AI applications require increased data transmission. Beyond speed, 5G must be utilized to create new business models and services, similar to how 4G enabled digital platforms like Gojek and Tokopedia. Gorman noted that Indonesia specifically needs to develop its own 5G use cases to ensure measurable economic benefits.
