AI imagery impacts body image while Gen Z favors physical photos
The rise of AI-generated imagery in advertising and social media is raising concerns regarding body image and authenticity. Experts and individuals note that AI can create photorealistic, “perfect” bodies that do not exist biologically, making it difficult for users to distinguish between real photography and synthetic content. This trend may exacerbate unrealistic beauty standards, particularly among young people.
In contrast to the AI hype, a survey of 2,000 individuals aged 18 to 29 in Germany conducted by Civey for Fujifilm instax suggests that Gen Z still places high value on physical media. When asked about special memories, 47% cited instant photos, while only 5% mentioned AI-generated images. For emotional value, traditional photo prints led with 38%, followed by instant photos at 34%. The preference for physical photography is driven by the desire to capture spontaneous moments and the tactile nature of holding a unique, physical memory.
