AI impact on job markets shows targeted displacement and sector-specific hiring booms

Recent economic data and industry analysis suggest a complex landscape for employment amidst the artificial intelligence boom. While some tech leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, have warned that AI could jeopardize nearly half of entry-level white-collar positions by 2030, empirical evidence indicates that job displacement is not yet widespread across the broader economy.

A study by the Stanford University Digital Economy Lab, utilizing ADP payroll data, found that the impact of AI is highly targeted. Specifically, employment among workers aged 22 to 25 in AI-exposed roles was approximately 19% lower than trends in non-exposed sectors, suggesting younger workers face the most significant strain.

Simultaneously, hiring is accelerating in sectors supporting the AI ecosystem. Analysis from Pave shows that companies focused on physical AI and robotics have seen headcount increases of 210% since mid-2024, significantly outperforming the general tech sector's 68% growth. Additionally, the aerospace and defense sectors have experienced a 158% increase in headcount during the same period, driven by contract-based demand and specialized technical requirements.
