AI impact on US labor market shows limited workforce displacement

Recent labor market data indicates that artificial intelligence is not causing a widespread wave of layoffs, despite its frequent mention as a reason for corporate downsizing. While many companies cite AI during restructuring announcements, an analysis by Austrian entrepreneur and AI expert Gerhard Kürner suggests the connection is often overstated.

Citing US Census Bureau business surveys, the data shows that only about 5% of businesses utilizing AI reported any change in workforce size. Within that group, approximately 2% reported a decrease in staff, while slightly more than 2% reported an increase.

The discrepancy between public perception and data suggests that AI often serves as a convenient explanation for investors during periods of cost-cutting. In reality, most layoffs are driven by traditional factors such as previous over-hiring, higher interest rates, increased financing costs, and organizational simplification. However, the impact is being felt disproportionately by entry-level workers, with a 19% employment gap emerging among 22–25-year-olds in professions highly exposed to AI.
