AI impacts workforce roles and professional authority

Recent studies highlight the evolving impact of artificial intelligence on employment, professional authority, and societal expectations. Reports from Anthropic reveal an “AI expectations gap” between US adults and industry insiders. While only 5% of US workers expect AI to perform 80% of their current tasks by 2030, over half of Anthropic staff hold that expectation. Additionally, Anthropic has noted a decrease in hiring for junior technical positions as AI agent activity increases, potentially creating a future shortage of senior professionals trained in judgment and taste.

Research from the Pew Research Center indicates a gender gap in AI usage, noting that while men and women use the technology at similar rates, men report using chatbots more frequently.

A survey by Use.AI suggests a growing “expertise recession,” where individuals feel more confident challenging professional advice after consulting AI tools. Approximately 64% of respondents reported increased confidence in questioning experts, and 46% stated that professional credentials carry less value than in the past. This trend is most prominent among younger adults, with 70% of those aged 18 to 34 feeling more comfortable questioning professional authority compared to 49% of those aged 45 and older.
