AI in healthcare faces scrutiny over ethics and user trust

Research is examining the ethical and psychological implications of integrating artificial intelligence into clinical care and patient communication.

A study involving adolescent patients and caregivers identified seven key domains of concern regarding digital behavioral markers—AI tools that detect clinical patterns through passive data collection. These domains include clinical utility, data security, privacy, patient autonomy, and the impact on the physician-patient relationship. The findings suggest a need for better ethical guidelines and informed consent processes to ensure these technologies are acceptable to users.

In a separate study focusing on older adults, researchers investigated how AI voice characteristics, such as tone and gender, influence trust and health compliance. The results indicated that neutral voices were more effective at encouraging older adults to follow health advice than emotional voices. The study also found that perceived professionalism and emotional closeness are critical factors in building the trust necessary for users to act on AI-driven health communications.
