AI in the workplace faces productivity challenges and evolving HR roles

A study conducted by Adaptavist among 2,500 knowledge workers in the United States, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Spain reveals a growing sense of nostalgia for the pre-AI workplace. Approximately 65% of workers report feeling nostalgic for previous organizational methods. This sentiment is particularly high among Generation Z, with 42% preferring the professional world before the widespread adoption of AI, compared to 26% of Generation X.

The study identifies a phenomenon termed the ‘verification tax,’ where the time saved by automation is offset by the need to check AI-generated outputs. Specifically, 42% of employees spend more time verifying AI results than they gain through the technology's efficiency.

In parallel, Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) are evolving through AI integration. Moving beyond simple administrative tasks like leave management, next-generation HRIS tools are becoming strategic assets. These systems use data and skill mapping to help companies anticipate organizational changes, identify critical skills, and manage workforce repositioning as automation alters job roles.
