AI industry faces monetization hurdles and governance needs

The software industry is facing a significant economic challenge as AI capabilities transition from competitive differentiators to baseline expectations. While companies are spending between 12% and 23% of their revenue on AI infrastructure and development, approximately 71% of vendors are not yet charging for these features, leading to eroded profit margins.

To address this, experts suggest that AI winners will be determined by economic design rather than just technical capability. Successful monetization requires aligning pricing with measurable value and customer trust to avoid friction.

Simultaneously, as autonomous AI agents move into production-critical roles, there is a growing need for formal governance frameworks. Current frameworks often treat safety as an afterthought, creating risks such as data deletion or unauthorized credential exfiltration. The implementation of a 'Constitution'—a layered policy framework—is emerging as a necessary architectural solution to ensure agent behavior remains safe and reliable, moving beyond the limitations of simple prompt-based safety.
