AI industry interests fund US political campaigns

AI industry interests and safety advocates are increasingly influencing US political campaigns through significant financial contributions. In California, Public First Action, an AI policy nonprofit primarily funded by Anthropic, has committed over $3.5 million to support Democratic State Senator Scott Wiener. Wiener, who is running to succeed Nancy Pelosi in Congress, has a history of championing AI oversight, including the passage of SB 53, which mandates transparency for frontier AI developers.

Similarly, in Minnesota, individuals within the AI industry have donated at least $41,000 to Democrat Peggy Flanagan’s US Senate campaign. Flanagan, the current lieutenant governor, has described AI as an “existential threat” and is endorsed by figures such as Bernie Sanders. While proponents see these investments as a way to ensure responsible regulation, critics and Republican officials argue that such funding supports candidates who may impose burdensome regulations that could stifle innovation.
