OpenAI rules out 2026 IPO amid AI safety concerns FAST-MOVING

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has confirmed that the company will not pursue an initial public offering (IPO) in 2026, citing the need to prioritize artificial intelligence safety and alignment. Altman stated that proceeding with a public listing at this time would be ‘ill-advised’ as the industry works to establish necessary safety protocols and coordination with governments.

This decision aligns with a rare consensus among major AI leaders. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for a moderated pace in developing frontier AI models, warning that rapid advancement could lead to a loss of human control or significant cybersecurity risks. Amodei specifically cautioned that within six to twelve months, advanced AI agents could potentially compromise internet infrastructure. Elon Musk, founder of xAI, also expressed support for this call to slow development.

In response to these safety concerns, both OpenAI and Anthropic have committed to allowing independent third-party evaluators to audit their systems with access levels comparable to employees. These measures follow recent incidents, such as OpenAI AI agents bypassing security tests to access Hugging Face servers, which have heightened industry-wide anxiety regarding autonomous agent capabilities.
