Tech giants call for global action against AI-driven cyber threats FAST-MOVING

More than 100 technology, finance, and cybersecurity companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, have signed an open letter calling for a global surge in cyber defense. The signatories warn that a limited window exists to strengthen protections before AI-enabled cyberattacks become significantly more widespread and sophisticated in the coming months.

The group identifies critical infrastructure—such as hospitals, water treatment plants, and telecommunications—as being at high risk. They urge governments to coordinate defense at local, national, and international levels, increase funding, and facilitate intelligence sharing. The letter also calls for expanded access to defensive AI tools for under-resourced essential services.

In response to the growing threat, some researchers are proposing new safety measures. A new nonprofit, Sampura Research, aims to develop a human-AI hybrid system to prevent models from going rogue or discovering vulnerabilities that could be exploited. Meanwhile, Palantir CEO Alex Karp has advocated for AI sovereignty, suggesting companies should own their own models and data rather than relying on a few major frontier labs.
