AI influencer Janie goes viral during Alabama sorority recruitment

A social media experiment involving a fictional AI-generated influencer has gained significant attention during the University of Alabama’s annual sorority recruitment cycle, known as ‘Bama Rush’. Launched by Olivia Moore, the persona @janie.b086 is a synthetic 19-year-old character created using generative AI tools like ChatGPT to simulate the experience of a sorority recruit.

During the experiment, the AI persona posted content including outfit videos and dances, amassing 1,300 followers and tens of thousands of views per video. The success of the persona led the Daily Mail to label her Alabama’s ‘most popular sorority star’.

The experiment aimed to explore human media literacy, algorithmic indexing, and content moderation on TikTok. It highlighted the contrast between the autonomous, simulated experience of an AI persona and the high-stakes, strictly regulated reality faced by human recruits, who must navigate complex social rules and potential emotional distress.
