AI infrastructure growth drives demand for advanced optical interconnects
The rapid expansion of AI infrastructure is driving significant advancements and rising costs in the optical communications and interconnect sectors. At the FIT Tech Day 2026, FIT Hon Teng (a Foxconn subsidiary) highlighted the industry's shift toward large-scale deployment of optical technologies to meet the connectivity demands of next-generation AI data centers. Industry leaders discussed the evolution of photonic technologies, including Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) and Optical I/O, to manage the increasing complexity of AI system architectures.
Simultaneously, at the CIOE China Optoelectronic Expo, discussions centered on the technical challenges of scaling AI interconnects. As GPU clusters grow from dozens to hundreds or thousands of units, the industry faces critical variables in rate, scale, and power consumption. While copper interconnects remain cost-effective for short distances, the transition to optical interconnects is accelerating as systems move toward higher speeds (400G/lane and beyond) and higher connection densities. Companies like Astera Labs are positioning themselves to address these needs, noting that the ultimate metric for hardware selection is becoming the total system cost per token produced.
