Alibaba and Microsoft drive massive AI infrastructure spending
Major technology companies are significantly increasing capital expenditures to support artificial intelligence infrastructure. Alibaba Group has raised 80 billion Hong Kong dollars through the issuance of 710 million new ordinary shares, with plans to direct the entire proceeds toward its AI business. This move follows a 45% year-on-year growth in Alibaba's AI cloud and compute service revenue during the April-June period. However, the strategy has faced scrutiny; Michael Burry of Scion Asset Management reportedly sold all Alibaba holdings following the share issuance announcement.
Microsoft has also reported significant financial impacts from its AI investments. In its fourth quarter, the company saw a $3.2 billion gain due to the increased accounting value of its partnership with Anthropic, contributing $0.33 to diluted earnings per share. Microsoft's total diluted earnings per share for the quarter reached $4.81. Internal data suggests that while Microsoft is pushing AI integration, high usage levels among employees have not yet correlated with increased bonuses or promotions.
On a broader scale, the massive spending by hyperscalers is impacting financial markets. J.P. Morgan Asset Management expects hyperscaler bond issuance to rise from 2% of total US investment-grade issuance (2022-2024) to 9% by 2026. This surge in corporate bond supply to fund data centers and AI infrastructure may contribute to higher bond yields and, consequently, higher mortgage rates.
