AI infrastructure needs drive massive global debt issuance by tech giants
Major technology companies, including Meta, Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Oracle, are driving an unprecedented wave of borrowing to fund the infrastructure and data centers required for artificial intelligence.
According to Goldman Sachs estimates, approximately $500 billion has been injected into AI-related companies since the beginning of the year. These hyperscalers alone account for roughly $200 billion of that total. Analysts expect these firms to issue more than $1 trillion in new debt over the coming years to support massive AI infrastructure needs.
This shift is significantly impacting global debt markets. Meta is reportedly preparing to enter the European bond market for the first time this autumn. The massive scale of these issuances is forcing other corporations and nations to adjust the timing and duration of their own borrowing to avoid competition for liquidity and rising costs.
