AI infrastructure debt crisis threatens neocloud providers
The artificial intelligence infrastructure sector is facing growing financial scrutiny as bond prices for major data center financiers plummet. Investors are expressing concerns that the massive debt taken on to build AI capacity may not be supported by sufficient future revenues, leading to fears of an AI-driven credit crisis.
CoreWeave, a prominent Nvidia-backed neocloud provider, has become a focal point of this volatility. The company's bonds have dropped significantly, with some trading near 75 cents per dollar, while its shares have seen sharp declines. Despite a reported Q2 net loss of $1.4 billion and total debt of $35.6 billion, supporters point to $103.7 billion in remaining performance obligations (RPOs) as evidence of future stability.
Other major players are also under pressure. Oracle's debt is nearing junk status, and bonds for projects like Hyperion and Project Excalibur have fallen below their par value. Gartner has issued a stark warning, predicting that 80% of neocloud providers may cease independent operations by 2030 due to the gap between capital expenditure and expected AI returns. The market is shifting from unbridled optimism toward a more cautious evaluation of the long-term viability of AI infrastructure investments.
