Nvidia expands into CPU market with Vera processor

Nvidia is challenging the long-standing dominance of Intel and AMD in the server CPU market with its new Vera processor. Designed specifically for AI workloads, the chip utilizes an ARM v9.2 instruction set with 88 custom Olympus cores.

Cloud infrastructure startup Modal announced plans to integrate Vera into its systems after preliminary tests showed the processor could double the task throughput for AI agents compared to equivalent Intel x86 configurations under concurrent loads. Modal intends to run the Vera chips alongside its existing Intel and AMD fleet to optimize performance based on specific workloads.

Nvidia expects to generate at least $20 billion from Vera chip sales this fiscal year. The company is also expanding its software ecosystem with the release of new open-weight AI models, including the 120-billion-parameter Nemotron 3.5 Super VL for enterprise agents and smaller Bolt models designed for local execution on AI PCs.
