AI integration advances in military defense and space autonomy

Developments in artificial intelligence are increasingly intersecting with military and regulatory sectors. In the defense industry, Hensoldt and the AI startup Helsing are testing MDOCore, a digital battlefield solution designed to merge combat data in real-time. These tests, currently taking place in Fürstenfeldbruck, are part of a selection process involving 30 system candidates that could lead to implementation by 2027 for the German Bundeswehr.

In the space domain, the rise of agentic AI is driving a push for autonomous systems capable of sensing, deciding, and acting at machine speed. China is reportedly pursuing “self-driving” satellite capabilities, such as the Siwei-Gaojing-2 satellites, which aim to understand their environment and perform maneuvers autonomously. This shift creates strategic pressure for other nations, including the US, to manage the risks of loss of control and decision-making errors.

Regarding AI governance, the UK Cabinet Office has rejected proposals for a legally mandated “kill switch” for powerful AI models. Despite initiatives from members of the House of Lords and House of Commons to establish emergency shutdown mechanisms via the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, the government argued that unilateral UK restrictions would not prevent global development or misuse of the technology.
