AI integration drives stablecoin demand and banking cyber risks
The expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) is creating new economic structures and security challenges within the financial sector. A report by BlackRock, titled ‘The Machine-Native Economy’, suggests that AI agents could drive increased demand for stablecoins. As these autonomous agents perform financial transactions and purchase services without human intervention, stablecoins and blockchain technology may serve as essential infrastructure for real-time, 24-hour, and high-frequency machine-to-machine settlements.
Simultaneously, the rise of AI is complicating the cybersecurity landscape for financial institutions. Michelle Bowman, Vice Chair for Supervision at the Federal Reserve, warned that AI is a double-edged sword, offering significant potential for both attackers and defenders. While AI can enhance defensive capabilities, it also lowers the barrier to entry for cybercriminals, enabling more sophisticated social engineering attacks and faster vulnerability identification. Bowman emphasized that banks must balance innovation with robust risk management, including multi-factor authentication, strict access controls, and proactive oversight from boards and senior management to maintain cyber resilience.
