AI integration expands in sports analytics and copyright litigation

Artificial intelligence is being integrated into major sporting and media landscapes through both enhanced fan experiences and ongoing legal disputes. At the U.S. Open, IBM’s Watsonx platform is utilizing data from cameras at Arthur Ashe Stadium to provide real-time insights. The system tracks player movements, such as limb flexion and wrist velocity, to generate metrics like ‘serve quality’ for fans via the tournament app. Officials expect over a billion data points to be produced by the end of the event.

In the legal sector, Microsoft is defending its Copilot chatbot against copyright infringement claims from publishers, including The New York Times. In recent legal filings, Microsoft stated that an analysis of 8.2 million chat logs showed minimal reproduction of news content. The company claims that only a tiny fraction of responses contained significant word matches with news articles or books, arguing that its use of copyrighted data for AI training constitutes fair use. The New York Times has rejected these findings, asserting that Microsoft and OpenAI have used its journalism to create products that substitute for original reporting.
