AI integration in Indian education outpaces policy frameworks

A study of students in Bangalore, India, reveals that the integration of Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models (LLMs) into education is outpacing current policy and governance frameworks.

Survey data from 125 students indicates high levels of engagement, with 48% using AI for academic purposes daily and 38.4% using it multiple times per week. Students reported the highest teaching effectiveness for AI in computer science and mathematics, noting that the ability to use the technology without fear of judgment is a primary motivator.

Despite widespread use, there is significant student resistance to AI-based assessments. The findings highlight a critical governance gap regarding accuracy standards, age-specific safeguards, and academic integrity. The report suggests that urgent regulatory action is needed within India’s existing frameworks, such as the National Education Policy 2020 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023, to address these developments.
