AI interaction may alter human communication patterns

A theoretical article published in the journal AI & Society suggests that frequent interaction with artificial intelligence systems, such as customer service bots in retail or healthcare, may lead to a bidirectional influence on communication. Researcher Inci Toral from the University of Birmingham notes that as robots become more human-like in their gestures and emotional signals, humans may adapt their own communication to better suit the patterns processed by AI.

The study proposes that users might smooth out personal traits, such as spontaneity or idiosyncrasies, to fit the structured exchanges reinforced by algorithmic systems. This conceptual framework suggests that the affirmative and pattern-guided feedback from AI could potentially influence an individual's sense of self and how they present themselves in digital conversations.
