The field of interacting with artificial intelligence is shifting from prompt engineering toward a discipline known as context engineering. While prompt engineering focuses on refining instructions and templates to communicate intent, the evolution of AI from simple chatbots to autonomous agents requires a more complex approach.

As AI systems begin to browse the web, use tools, and execute multi-step workflows, the primary challenge is determining what information a model needs to make correct decisions in real-time. Anthropic describes context engineering as the practice of curating and maintaining the optimal information available to a model during inference.
