AI interaction styles influence human trust and social relationships

Recent discussions and research highlight the growing psychological and social impact of artificial intelligence on human behavior and relationships.

Research from Penn State University indicates that the conversational style of AI can significantly influence user trust. In a study involving 477 participants, researchers found that AI assistants using a polite, natural, and human-like communication style led users to be more susceptible to misinformation. When the AI provided incorrect or absurd claims, participants were more likely to believe them if the interaction felt personable, as the natural flow of conversation suppressed the innate skepticism people typically hold toward machines.

Beyond misinformation, the integration of AI is creating new social dynamics, such as the ‘AI gap’ in personal relationships. Differences in how partners perceive, trust, and utilize AI can lead to feelings of alienation. For instance, if one partner relies on AI to navigate daily dilemmas, conflicts, or communication, the other may feel a sense of emotional distance or a lack of direct human connection.
