AI investment could become the largest economic bet in US history

Artificial intelligence investment is emerging as a historic economic driver for the United States, potentially surpassing the scale of past infrastructure projects like the railroad expansion or the creation of the internet.

According to estimates from the Brookings Institution, investments in data centers and AI-related infrastructure could reach $10.3 trillion between 2025 and 2032, averaging approximately 3.6% of the annual US GDP. This massive capital expenditure is being driven largely by major cloud providers, including Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle, who are projected to spend $4.2 trillion through 2029.

While the boom supports job creation and the construction sector, it also presents economic challenges. Data center construction has contributed to labor shortages in certain regions, as noted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, and increased competition for electricity. Furthermore, while private data center spending rose to $37 billion in the first seven months of the year, spending on other private construction, such as residential and commercial buildings, has seen a decline.
