AI investment boom impacts corporate bond markets

The artificial intelligence boom is increasingly impacting the bond market. Massive investments in AI and cloud computing by technology companies are driving a high demand for financing, leading to a growing supply of high-quality corporate bonds.

Recent market trends show that the high demand for computing power is benefiting not only the semiconductor industry but also data center expansion, industrial equipment, and infrastructure companies. While US technology stocks have seen significant gains, such as the Nasdaq-100 rising nearly nine percent, the positive momentum is spreading to energy, raw materials, and financial sectors.

However, this surge in issuance is creating pressure on credit spreads. The massive volume of new tech-related debt is causing spreads to widen, even for top-tier, high-credit-quality issuers. This phenomenon is attributed to supply exceeding current buyer appetite at existing prices rather than a fundamental decline in company balance sheets. As the market attempts to digest the flood of new papers, buyers are demanding higher risk premiums to compensate for price uncertainty.
