AI Investment Surge Fuels S&P 500 Rally Amid Bubble Fears
A surge in artificial‑intelligence investment has helped lift the S&P 500 to fresh record highs, prompting analysts to compare the rally with market cycles of 1999 and 2007. In each prior cycle, a sharp correction was followed by a strong recovery and a new peak before a later downturn. The current market’s Shiller cyclically adjusted price‑to‑earnings (CAPE) ratio is hovering near 40, a level last seen during the dot‑com bubble, raising concerns that valuations may be stretched.
Unlike the late‑1990s internet boom, many AI‑focused firms now generate substantial profits, strong cash flows and dominant market positions in chips, cloud infrastructure and enterprise software. Nevertheless, the combination of record valuations and rapid price appreciation has revived fears that investors could be overlooking risks in pursuit of the next technological revolution.
