AI industry leaders call for slowdown to manage safety risks

Leading executives from major AI laboratories, including Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google DeepMind, have joined a growing call to slow the development of frontier AI models. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei argued that the pace of capability advancement must be moderated to allow safety alignment, testing, and risk prevention to keep up with technological progress.

This movement follows the resignation of Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who warned of the existential risks posed by the current trajectory of AI development. Adding to the urgency, Anthropic alignment security leader Evan Hubinger estimated a greater than 10% chance of AI causing human extinction within the next decade. Other industry figures, including Elon Musk and Sam Altman, have expressed support for the general concept of a slowdown.

However, the proposal faces significant geopolitical and economic opposition. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang rejected calls for new regulations, calling them unnecessary. Politically, Donald Trump has dismissed doomsday predictions as a hoax, arguing that slowing development would allow China to seize a decisive technological advantage. Analysts note that a global slowdown is difficult to coordinate, as any nation or company that pauses risks being overtaken by competitors in a high-stakes race for artificial general intelligence (AGI).
