AI logistics sector sees governance framework rollout and surge in cargo thefts

The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) has issued a free AI governance framework for trucking and logistics firms. The document offers 50 practical controls covering five governance domains to help organisations assess AI use cases, protect data, manage cybersecurity risks and define accountability as AI tools become integral to maintenance planning, route optimisation and back‑office functions. NMFTA director of cybersecurity Ben Wilkens said, “The challenge isn’t whether AI will be part of operations—it’s ensuring organisations have the visibility, governance, and controls necessary to use it responsibly.”

Separately, U.S. law‑enforcement agencies uncovered an organized cargo‑theft ring targeting high‑value AI data‑center supplies. A multi‑state investigation led to the recovery of two trailers in Chicago containing roughly $1.3 million worth of copper wire spools and server‑hardware components. The thieves used stolen commercial plates, forged documents and GPS‑tracker swapping to intercept shipments originating from Alabama and Florida, highlighting a new criminal threat linked to the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure.

Both developments illustrate the growing operational and security challenges as AI becomes embedded in transportation and data‑center supply chains.
