AI lowers barriers for firmware modification and device hacking

Artificial intelligence is lowering the technical barriers required to modify device firmware, a process that previously demanded extensive reverse engineering skills. Recent cases demonstrate how AI models can guide users with limited technical expertise to analyze hardware, uncover hidden functions, and bypass manufacturer restrictions.

In one instance, a user spent $266 in AI tokens to strip the Amazon ecosystem from a $114 Fire HD 10 tablet, effectively regaining full control of the device. The process involved switching between different AI models, such as Kimi and GLM-5, when others like Claude refused to assist due to cybersecurity filters.

Other findings include security vulnerabilities in consumer electronics. Research showed an Insta360 Link camera could continue recording even when its indicator LED was off, and a Shure MV7 microphone contained USB commands that could bypass physical mute buttons. While these developments support the ‘right to repair,’ they also present new risks by making it easier to identify and exploit vulnerabilities in connected home devices.
