AI lowers the economic barrier for sophisticated cyberattacks
A recent threat report from Anthropic highlights a shift in the economics of cyberattacks, noting that AI models are making sophisticated campaigns significantly cheaper and faster to execute. Between December 2025 and August 2026, threat actors utilized AI to conduct attacks that previously required large teams and significant budgets. The report details how single individuals can now manage multi-victim campaigns, with some breaches progressing from initial access to bulk data theft in as little as two to three hours.
These findings underscore a growing gap between the speed of AI-driven exploitation and traditional security validation cycles. As attackers use AI to automate tasks like target selection and campaign execution, security professionals are being urged to move beyond relying solely on vulnerability severity scores. Instead, there is an increasing need for rapid validation to determine if specific vulnerabilities are actually exploitable within a given environment and whether existing controls can effectively block them.
