AI medical advice for children faces accuracy concerns

As parents increasingly turn to artificial intelligence for medical guidance regarding their children, experts are raising concerns about the accuracy and safety of these tools. A 2024 study published in JAMA Pediatrics indicated that a popular chatbot provided incorrect diagnoses in approximately 83% of pediatric cases.

While newer AI models demonstrate an improved ability to synthesize large amounts of information and distill complex topics, they remain prone to 'hallucinations,' where they present fabricated information or non-existent sources with high confidence. Additionally, these models may offer excessive reassurance, potentially creating a false sense of security for caregivers. The American Academy of Pediatrics has noted that AI lacks the ability to grasp human emotion or the nuanced interpersonal dynamics essential to pediatric care.
