AI military technology advances as Japan boosts defense spending
The rapid integration of artificial intelligence into military applications is transforming modern warfare. In Ukraine, the conflict has become a testing ground for AI-powered weaponry, specifically autonomous drones capable of identifying targets and navigating terrain even when GPS or communication signals are jammed by electronic warfare.
In response to shifting security environments, Japan is accelerating its transition toward unmanned defense assets. Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi has outlined a strategy to reform the Self-Defense Forces into an organization that utilizes unmanned equipment, such as drone swarms, submersibles, and ground vehicles, to compensate for personnel shortages. To facilitate this, the Ministry of Defense is promoting 'Defense Tech' by integrating civilian advancements in AI, software, and space technology into military hardware.
To speed up this process, the Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency has implemented a 'Fast Path Procurement' system, allowing contracts with startups and small businesses to be finalized in as little as three and a half months. This push for modernization is reflected in the Ministry of Defense's recent budget request of approximately 8.9 trillion yen, a significant increase intended to bolster national defense through technological superiority.
