AI mobile tool development targets adolescent obesity and diabetes prevention

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has awarded a three-year grant to Dr. Amanda Ziegler at the University at Buffalo to develop an AI-powered mobile health tool aimed at preventing adolescent obesity and diabetes. The project seeks to bridge a research gap where clinicians often feel unequipped or hesitant to provide nutrition advice. By integrating smartphone technology and artificial intelligence into primary care electronic medical systems, the tool will provide digestible, patient-specific lifestyle guidance to make counseling more effective and less stigmatizing.

Globally, childhood obesity remains a critical health concern. The World Health Organization reports that approximately 188 million children and adolescents live with obesity. Key contributors to this trend include the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, which provide high caloric intake without satiety, and ultra-processed foods (UPFs). Research indicates that high consumption of UPFs—such as packaged snacks and fast food—is directly correlated with higher body mass index and abnormal metabolic markers in children.
