AI perception and usage trends reveal human-machine boundaries

Recent studies highlight the evolving relationship between humans and artificial intelligence, focusing on how people perceive AI consciousness and how they utilize the technology for personal support.

A study led by Dr. Louis Longin at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, published in the journal Cognition, examined how humans attribute mental states to AI. By comparing how participants rated the consciousness of AI agents versus humans in identical scenarios, researchers found that while people recognize intelligent behavior, they maintain a sharp distinction between sophisticated performance and true consciousness.

In a separate trend, research commissioned by Tele2 reveals that young adults are increasingly turning to AI for emotional support. The study found that 61 percent of individuals aged 18–29 have used AI chatbots to discuss emotional well-being, feelings, or personal difficulties within the last six months. Interestingly, this occurs despite 63 percent of the same demographic reporting they have at least one person they can talk to openly about such matters. Experts suggest this reflects a desire for immediate, accessible, and digital-first ways to process emotions.
