AI poses unprecedented challenges to central bank policy

Markus Brunnermeier, an economist at Princeton University, has warned that the widespread use of artificial intelligence in financial markets could pose unprecedented challenges to regulatory authorities and central bank effectiveness. Speaking at the Jackson Hole economic symposium, Brunnermeier noted that AI agents could process vast amounts of data to predict central bank movements with extreme accuracy.

In extreme scenarios, the Federal Reserve might be forced to issue dual updates following meetings—one for human investors and another for machines—to allow humans time to adjust. Furthermore, central bankers may need to abandon decades of transparency strategies in favor of more ambiguous communication to prevent sophisticated AI systems from exploiting their decisions.
