AI-powered camera networks deployed for wildfire detection
Various regions are implementing artificial intelligence and high-resolution camera networks to improve early wildfire detection and emergency response times.
In California, the ALERTCalifornia network, managed by UC San Diego, utilizes approximately 1,300 high-resolution cameras. Since integrating AI in 2023, the system has detected 51% of the state's fires in their early stages. The network, funded by CAL FIRE and utility companies, features cameras capable of 360-degree scans and infrared technology that allows for detection up to 193 kilometers away at night.
In La Calera, Chile, the Cuerpo de Bomberos de La Calera has launched the ‘IronFire’ Early Detection System. This platform uses elevated cameras and AI algorithms to identify smoke columns and provide precise geolocation. The system, installed at the fire department's headquarters, monitors the commune in 360-degree views and sends alerts to both the fire department's alarm center and CONAF to facilitate faster deployment of units.
