AI-powered smart glasses expand autonomy for visually impaired individuals

Assistive technology utilizing artificial intelligence is being deployed to increase autonomy for individuals with visual impairments. These smart glasses, such as the OrCam MyEye 2, use integrated cameras to transform printed or digital text into audio and assist users in recognizing their surroundings.

Key functionalities include identifying colors, recognizing faces, detecting products, and reading currency. The technology operates autonomously without requiring an internet connection, aiding users in education, professional environments, and daily social activities.

In Maricá, the TechVisão program is providing up to 95 of these devices to residents with blindness or low vision through a loan system. Meanwhile, the Association for Support to the Deaf and Visually Impaired (ACADAV) is also investing in these technological tools to facilitate daily routines and improve accessibility for its members.
