AI-powered traffic cameras deployed in Italy and Spain to detect speed, phone use and seatbelts

Italian traffic police are testing a new AI‑based speed camera in Treviglio that also automatically detects drivers using mobile phones and not wearing seatbelts. The system uses high‑resolution cameras and visual‑recognition algorithms to flag violations, which are then reviewed by operators.

In Spain, the city of Pamplona has installed four 8‑in‑1 AI radars that can monitor speed, phone use, seatbelt compliance, red‑light running, illegal turning, lane changes and other offences. Each unit costs about €20,000 and is mounted on poles or overpasses, allowing coverage of multiple lanes in both directions. Authorities expect the technology to improve road safety and may expand it across Europe.
