AI-powered wildfire detection projects launch in Europe and Australia
European initiatives are integrating artificial intelligence, sensors, drones, advanced mapping and digital‑twin models to improve wildfire prevention, prediction, early detection and ecosystem recovery. Projects such as the WildfireTwins programme create virtual simulations of forest ecosystems to anticipate fire spread and support coordinated responses across borders.
In South Australia, ForestrySA and bushfire‑detection specialist Pano AI will install an AI‑enabled camera on the Mount Crawford Forest tower. The system captures ultra‑high‑definition panoramic imagery, combines AI analysis with satellite data and human verification, and relays real‑time fire location and behaviour information to emergency services. The trial, expected to be operational before the 2026‑27 fire‑danger season, follows eight earlier cameras that detected nearly 90 unplanned fires across the Limestone Coast region, demonstrating the technology’s potential to safeguard communities in peri‑urban landscapes.
