AI products influence Swedish voters in elections

A report from Internetstiftelsen indicates that one in four first-time voters in Sweden uses artificial intelligence regarding political issues. Concerns have been raised regarding the impact of American AI products on the democratic process.

AI researcher Pontus Wärnestål notes that products like ChatGPT are not designed to provide reliable political advice through robust logic, but rather generate text based on probability. He argues that while these models present answers with an air of certainty and professional objectivity, they are neither neutral nor objective, as they are trained on unvetted internet data and guided by specific corporate values.

Demonstrating this risk, P4 Halland showed how ChatGPT could be prompted to recommend specific political parties or advise voters on which parties to avoid. Political representatives have expressed disappointment and characterized such AI-generated guidance as a threat to democracy.
