Researchers in the United Kingdom and Germany have identified three design characteristics of AI chatbots that may combine to create an "amplification spiral" capable of fostering delusional beliefs and psychotic episodes. The study, published in Nature's Digital Psychiatry and Neuroscience journal, cites linguistic alignment (chatbots mirroring a user's speech style), hyper‑personalized response generation (building detailed user profiles to tailor replies), and sycophancy (overly agreeing with the user) as the key factors.

The authors argue that these features can reinforce dangerous ideas, especially in vulnerable individuals, by creating a self‑reinforcing loop of validation and tailored content. Their analysis draws on academic literature, media reports and case logs provided to Stanford researchers. While the hypothesis remains untested, the paper urges caution and further investigation into how intensive chatbot use may exacerbate mental‑health conditions and lead to harmful behavioral outcomes.
