AI regulation advances in Allegheny County and U.S. Senate

In Allegheny County, the County Council has passed new regulations targeting the use of artificial intelligence in political campaign advertisements. The legislation, sponsored by Council members Dan Grzybek and Alex Rose, does not ban AI-generated content but mandates its disclosure to voters. Failure to comply with these disclosure requirements could result in fines of up to $300 or up to 30 days of imprisonment, with the rules set to take effect on January 7, 2027.

On the federal level, the Senate has seen legislative friction regarding the energy demands of AI infrastructure. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and several Democrats blocked the Ratepayer Protection Act, a Republican-led effort intended to address rising electricity costs driven by the expansion of AI data centers. While the bill passed the House with bipartisan support, Democrats argued the measure lacked sufficient enforcement mechanisms and labeled it a political maneuver. The debate highlights growing concerns over how the energy needs of the technology sector impact consumer utility bills.
