AI reshapes entry-level sales careers through attrition

Artificial intelligence is fundamentally altering go-to-market (GTM) career paths, particularly for entry-level sales roles. Rather than widespread mass layoffs, the industry is seeing a trend of natural attrition. Companies are increasingly choosing not to backfill junior positions, such as Sales Development Representatives (SDRs), because AI tools can now manage transactional tasks like prospecting, list-building, and templated outbound sequences.

Data from various industry analyses indicates that 36% of surveyed B2B software companies cut sales development teams in 2025. This shift creates a significant pipeline problem for the industry. Historically, the SDR role served as a critical training ground and on-ramp for aspiring Account Executives (AEs). As these entry-level roles diminish, the traditional path for professional advancement within sales departments is becoming considerably narrower.
