AI reshapes Indonesian workforce, creating new jobs while displacing routine roles

Artificial intelligence is becoming a core component of many Indonesian sectors, from search engines and office suites to healthcare and manufacturing. Studies cited by the articles estimate that generative AI could add trillions of dollars to the global economy and that around 40% of jobs worldwide will be affected. The World Economic Forum projects that by 2030 about 92 million routine positions could be displaced globally, while 170 million new roles may emerge, yielding a net gain of roughly 78 million jobs.

In Indonesia, this shift is already evident. Routine occupations such as cashiers, customer‑service agents and data‑entry clerks are increasingly automated through self‑checkout systems, AI chatbots and optical‑character‑recognition tools. At the same time, demand is rising for professionals in data analytics, cybersecurity, AI development, software engineering and other fields that require critical thinking and creativity. Successful adoption depends on building digital infrastructure, upskilling workers and establishing proper governance.
