AI reshapes skills for young programmers at IOI

At the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, 386 elite young programmers from 97 countries faced algorithmic challenges that are increasingly being influenced by artificial intelligence.

Organizers and participants noted that AI is shifting the focus of programming competitions. Giorgio Audrito, leader of the Italian delegation, stated that the community is still adapting to the reality that students have access to AI, which complicates the organization of online contests. He emphasized that programming expertise remains essential to guide and review AI-generated outputs.

Competitors observed that AI may change the balance between manual coding and conceptual problem-solving. Gold medalist Qiwen Xu from China noted that while coding used to take a significant portion of contest time, AI could eventually handle much of the manual syntax, allowing programmers to dedicate more time to high-level reasoning and problem analysis.
