AI safety requires US-China cooperation, says former US Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin

Former US Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin has called for increased cooperation between the United States and China regarding artificial intelligence safety. Speaking at the 2026 Bund Summit in Shanghai, Rubin warned that the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, driven by open-source technology, poses significant risks including cyberattacks and other severe negative consequences for which global solutions are currently lacking.

Rubin noted that while AI has the potential to boost productivity, its ultimate economic impact remains uncertain. He highlighted risks such as potential unemployment for knowledge workers and increased income inequality if benefits accrue primarily to capital rather than labor. Regarding financial stability, he stated the probability of AI-related investments triggering a systemic financial crisis in the US is “extremely low,” noting that large banks remain well-capitalized.

In a separate development, the Committee for the Chinese in Global Engineering (CIE-USA/GNYC) announced its 2026 annual meeting and award recipients. The event, scheduled for October 25 in Flushing, New York, will feature a technology forum focusing on AI applications in education, healthcare, and social governance. The organization will honor four experts for their contributions to fields including AI, quantum computing, 6G communications, and digital security.
