AI search adoption reduces website click rates

The rise of AI-driven search is significantly altering web traffic patterns, leading to a decline in click-through rates even when search rankings remain stable. Data from Ahrefs indicates that in Japan, click rates for the top-ranked page dropped by approximately 37.8% following the introduction of AI-generated summaries, while the global decline reached roughly 58% by late 2025.

Experts suggest that traditional metrics like total page views may no longer be sufficient for individual business owners. Instead, they recommend focusing on brand-specific searches, inquiry volumes, and the frequency with which a brand is cited by AI models. Because AI often uses 'Query Fanout' and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to pull specific answers from various sources, being the top-ranked result is less critical than providing direct, concise answers to specific questions.

To adapt, content creators are advised to restructure articles by placing conclusions at the beginning and using questions as headings. This approach increases the likelihood of being cited by AI, even if the overall volume of casual browsing traffic decreases.
